HollywoodNews.com: Anne Rice, author of Interview with the Vampire, is widely regarded as the original queen of vampire fiction, but more recently, she’s better known as a Christian writer and outspokenly devout Catholic, having made a public (and controversial) re-conversion to Christianity several years ago. This week, however, Rice announced on her official Facebook page that she is once again leaving the church. “I quit being a Christian,” she writes. “I’m out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian…I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being ‘Christian’ or to being part of Christianity. It’s simply impossible for me to ‘belong’ to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I’ve tried. I’ve failed. I’m an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else.” But rejecting organized religion does not mean Rice is rejecting the core of her faith. As Michael Rowe writes in the Huffington Post today, she has in fact never been more of a Christian. In her own words, “My faith in Christ is central to my life. My conversion from a pessimistic atheist lost in a world I didn’t understand, to an optimistic believer in a universe created and sustained by a loving God is crucial to me. But following Christ does not mean following His followers.” Rice–whose gay son, Christopher, is a best-selling author in his own right–has been a vocal gay rights advocate for years, and recently published a religious memoir, Called Out of Darkness.
